True Fasting

7 03 2011

Today the 9th of March 2011, Christians all around the globe will observe the Season of Lent that starts today. It starts with “Ash Wednesday” and ends on Easter Day. A total of 47 days of fasting and prayer. What exactly is True Fasting in ones Christian life during this period of Lent season?

In which manner are we fasting? What is our reason of fasting? What are we fasting for? At times I feel like a sinner when my friends who are believers ask me this question, “Are you fasting or not?” Many of them fast because they think it is compulsory and it is an obligation to do so. That is good. But again what are they really fasting for? Is it a time to go on a “Lose Weight Programme”? That is what many of them tell me! Some of them will also tell others that they are fasting. Their appearance itself will show that they are fasting. Do we really need to show others that we are fasting? When they fast they want to look somber and let others know that they are going on a fast. What “hypocrisy”! But the word of God says, When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but to only to God who is unseen and who sees what is done in secret and will reward you. ( Matthew 6: 17-18 )

What kind of fasting does God really require us to do? Is it not to lose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke , to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter, when you see the naked to clothe him and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? ( Isaiah 58:6-7 ) Is it not a time to humble oneself before God and to all mankind? Is it not a time to treat others fairly? Is it not a time to forgive and to pray for our enemies? Let us reflect on these things.

The Season of Lent is a time for each and every one of us to reflect on ONESELF. “ARE WE REALLY WHO WE ARE”? Have we forgiven those who have hurt us by their words and deeds? Can we take this time to pray for our enemies and those who have back stabbed and bad-mouthed us ! What is the use of fasting and praying when we don’t have a forgiving heart and we expect God to hear our prayers! Fasting on food is easy to do but try going on a “mouth fast”. It is really difficult to do my dear friends. As believers, let us put aside our differences, let us stop gossiping and speaking all kinds of unwanted words that comes out from our mouth.

The book of James speaks on “TAMING THE TONGUE”. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and other creatures of the sea are being tamed and have been tamed by man, but no man can tame the tongue. It is a reckless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise God and with it we curse men, who have been made in Gods likeness. Out of the same mouth comes praises and cursing. ( James 3:7-10 ) Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, let us take this Season of Lent to know who we really are and our standing with God. Are our hearts and attitude towards fasting right before God? It is a time for me to reflect on Myself about the right attitude of fasting. How about You? Have a Blessed Lent Season 2011.
