“Friends, Everyone Of Us Has A Thorn In Our Flesh”

20 05 2011

Greetings, I bring to you my dear friends in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ Our Redeemer! Dearly beloved friends, as we take a look at today’s topic it speaks about “The thorn in our flesh.” St Paul also speaks about “his thorn in his flesh.” What is the thorn that St Paul is speaking about. Let us take a look at what the word of God has to reveal to each and every one of us regarding “The Thorn In Our Flesh.”

Dear friends, each and everyone of us has a thorn in our flesh. None of us are without a thorn in our flesh. Friends, have you ever realized how painful is it to bear with the pain of the thorn in your flesh. It is there and you cannot remove it away. Why does God allow us to have that thorn in our flesh. St Paul pleaded to God three times to take it away from him. But God replied to St Paul as it is written in 2 Corinthians 12:8 ” My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.  St Paul replied, “Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecution, in difficulties. For when I am weak, I am strong.

Dear friends, Paul did not even mention about  the thorn in the flesh? However, one thing is sure, that he was really concerned about this issue. It continually distracted him. He was distressed by it.He prayed thrice that it may depart from him. Some scholars say, it was a disease, sickness, which kept him from serving God, some say, it was some area of life, which he was struggling with.It was holding Paul back from complete devotion and commitment towards his ministry. It was his ‘weakness’, he may have found himself struggling over this issue so many times or not he wouldn’t have pleaded to God to remove the thorn away. There were so many things that distracted Paul that was mentioned in 2 Corinthians 12:10 but the “thorn in the flesh” was the most disturbing thing to Paul. But after pleading to God and when God gave him the answer Paul was relieved as we can see that he said that he will “boast” all the more about his suffering. God assured Paul that in everything His grace was made sufficient for him.

Dear friends, just for your information, I personally believe God doesn’t want us to know what Paul’s thorn in the flesh was. It was not mentioned at all what the thorn in the flesh that was in Paul was. It is between God and him. Even today my friends, many of us believers out there are suffering with the thorn in the flesh! Friends, is that thorn in your flesh stopping you from moving forward to do God’s ministry? We all have our own weakness and God knows it. It is between you and God. God knows what you are going through. Your thorn in the flesh could be sickness, pride, hurt, suffering, anger or sin.

Dear friends, you may have prayed over hundreds of times, but still struggling with it, which holds you back from total devotion to God. Perhaps, you may have some weakness, which no one can understand, not even, your spouse, or your best friend. But God knows it, He understands it, He knows what you are going through and He has given you the Greatest Gift that is Christ Jesus.Christ lives in you, his power resides in you. You can overcome anything by his power. His power is continually increased as the weakness grows.Human weakness opens the way for more of Christ’s power and grace. So be joyful and rejoice my friends and boast about your sufferings and weaknesses. Because only in your weaknesses, God’s grace is made sufficient for you. When you are weak He makes you strong.

Dear friends, just like Paul we too need to change our perspective regarding our weakness and the thorn in the flesh. See how Paul’s perspective changed by God’s answer; now he took pleasure and glory for Christ’ sake in what he wanted to get rid of, (not to dwell in it), but to realize that Christ’s power lives in him.Now Paul did not look at it as something which holds him back, but that, Christ’s power is given unto him to overcome not only this weakness but all things. Like Paul, let us avoid dwelling on it that is our weakness. Satan wants you to dwell on your weaknesses so that you will be drifted away from God’s plan for you. Do not be discouraged or disheartened. Do not accept that you will live with your weaknesses for the rest of your life.Do not believe that you cannot overcome it. Friends you and I are conquerors in Christ. We can conquer anything with the power God gives us from above. Do not be afraid and live in constant fear. Remember, God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power,of love and a sound mind.( 2 Timothy 1:7 )

Dearly beloved friends, as believers this is not something new that is happening to us. “The thorn in the flesh” is the work of Satan to torment you and distract you from moving forward to do God’s will. God has given us His grace and His grace is made sufficient for each and every one of us. Friends, we are so concern about the thorn in our flesh. What about the crown of Thorns that was placed around the head of our Lord Jesus who redeemed us from our sins. Have we ever been concerned about that thorn in our Lord’s flesh? Think about it, my friends! Have a Blessed day.

God Bless.
