“The Meaning Of True Discipleship”

12 06 2011

Greetings I bring to you my friends in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ Our Redeemer. Dear friends, as we take a look at today’s topic entitled above about “The true meaning of Discipleship” let us see exactly what does it mean to be a true disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ. Stay on with me friends and do read on and be blessed.

Dearly beloved friends, looking at the above topic again, let us see exactly what does it mean to be a true disciple of Christ?  The Word used for ‘Disciple’ in Greek (‘mathetes’) refers generally to student, pupil, or apprentice. Many of us as believers at a certain time in our life would like to go into being a disciple of Christ Jesus. What is the reason or motif that he or she wants to be a disciple of Christ Jesus?  First and foremost let us see who is this disciple and the definition of Discipleship? A disciple is a follower of a master, spiritual teacher or a religious leader. A disciple is one who lives by the teachings and lifestyle of his master and also holds the standard and ideals set by his master. A disciple is a person who wants to be like his master. He wants to follow the footsteps of his master.

Dear friends, how can one become the disciple of Jesus Christ? First the decision to follow Jesus Christ is the beginning of a christian discipleship. Friends, Jesus himself demonstrated the conditions of being his disciple. It is indeed not a bed of roses as some of us may think. Jesus himself said that the Son of God himself will have no place to lay his head. So being a disciple of Christ Jesus is not at all a bed of roses. It is not a way of constant success and prosperity. But as we see today, there are servants of God who are out there to make money from the ministry the Lord has handed unto them. They have misused it for their own selfish gain. They need an expensive vehicle to travel in to do the Lord’s ministry. Jesus walked and walked from one village to another to bring the word of God to the people. Jesus told the rich person to sell all his property and possessions and follow him. The rich man was very unhappy about it. Friends, choosing to be a disciple of our Lord is not to fill up the extra or spare time that you have in your hands. It is the hunger and thirst that we have within us for the souls out there. We should have a burden for the souls that are perishing without knowing the truth.

Dear friends, many of us must have the calling to be a true discipleship of Christ Jesus.  What is the cost of being a true discipleship of God? First it is Cross Bearing. According to the word of god as it is written, Matthew 16:24 – “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” Yes, friends we have to deny ourselves if we want to be disciples of Christ. It is also written in, Matthew 10:38: – “anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.”  We  as disciples of Christ must carry the cross and follow our Lord Jesus and  it is not and easy task to do.  In the book of  Galatians 2:20: – “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” Yes, my friends, when we are crucified in Christ Jesus we have to die to ourselves because it is Christ that lives within us and we have been crucified in our Lord Jesus Christ. Friends, the way of Cross is the way of pain, suffering, ridicule, mockery, humiliation!  Friends we have indeed as disciples have to go through the way of Cross. It is also to crucify our sinful desires. Gal 5:24: – “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires.” Friends, we indeed have to be crucified to all our sinful nature that is within us if we want to be disciples for Christ Jesus.

Dearly beloved we need to think carefully and we must have the calling to be disciples of Christ Jesus. Have a Blessed day and Stay Blessed.

God Bless.
