“What Is True Fasting?” Does It Pleases God The Way We Fast Today?

22 02 2012

Shalom and greetings I bring to you my beloved friends around the globe in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ our Savior, Redeemer and Deliverer. My prayer for each and everyone of you today is that as we enter the Season of Lent today, let our hearts be inclined to the true meaning of the Lent Season. What does God really require from each one of us during this time of the Lent Season? Continue to read the rest of the article and Be Blessed at all times. May the grace and the love of God be with you and your household always. Dearly beloved friends, today around the globe, believers will be observing the Season of Lent. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a season of penance, reflection and fasting that prepares ones heart for the Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, through which by Faith we believe we attain redemption. Why do we receive the Ash on our foreheads? Following the examples of the Ninevites, who did their penance in sackcloth and ashes, our foreheads are marked with ashes to remind us to humble ourselves and our hearts and to be a reminder to us that life passes away on Earth. We remember this when we are told, “Remember that man is dust, and unto dust shall man return!”Ashes are a symbol of penance made sacramental by the blessing of the Church, and they help us develop a spirit of humility and sacrifice.

Where do we get the Ashes from? The ashes are made from the blessed palms used in the Palm Sunday celebration of the previous year.  While the ashes symbolize penance and contrition, they are also a reminder that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. His Divine mercy is of utmost importance during the season of Lent, and the Church calls on us to seek that mercy during the entire Lenten season with reflection, prayer and penance.

Dearly beloved friends, during this Season of Lent many believers will opt to fast during this Season of Lent. Before we ever decide to Fast let us see What is True Fasting in ones Christian life during this period of the Season of Lent? In which manner are we fasting? What is our reason of fasting? What are really fasting for? Do we take this season of Lent as a time for a Weight Losing Programme? That is what many believers are doing today! Many of them will boast to others that there are going on a Fast. I wonder when we are going on a Fast why do we need others to know that we are on a Fast? When they Fast they want to look somber. Is this the kind of fasting God requires from us? What “hypocrisy?”  But when we refer to the written word of God it says, “When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to God who is unseen and who sees what is done in secret and will reward you.(Matthew 6:17-18)

Dearly beloved friends,What kind of fasting does God really require us to do? Is it not to lose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke , to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter, when you see the naked to clothe him and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? ( Isaiah 58:6-7 ) Is it not a time to humble oneself before God and to all mankind? Is it not a time to treat others fairly? Is it not a time to forgive and to pray for our enemies? Let us reflect on these things.

The Season of Lent is a time for each and every one of us to reflect on ONESELF. “ARE WE REALLY WHO WE ARE”? Are our Hearts Right before God? Have we forgiven those who have hurt us by their words and deeds? Can we take this time to pray for our enemies and those who have back stabbed and bad-mouthed us ! What is the use of fasting and praying when we don’t have a forgiving heart and we expect God to hear our prayers! Fasting on food is easy to do but try going on a “mouth fast”. It is really difficult to do my dear friends. As believers, let us put aside our differences, let us stop gossiping and speaking all kinds of unwanted words that comes out from our mouth. May the Holy Spirit of God guide our hearts and each one of us during this Season of Lent to really know what does God really requires out of us! Have a Meaningful Season of Lent 2012!

God Bless
